Procedures: Step 1 Lead in (Before class, give Ss some cards about some famous persons.) T: Hello, everyone. How are you today? I’m very glad to be here with you. Just now I heard some of you were guessing who I am. And before class, I’ve given each pair a piece of paper. Someone may be puzzled at what I want to do. Now let’s continue this guessing.  There’re some key words about a person on the screen. I’ll use attributive clauses to make some sentences. After my descriptions, please tell me the name of him or her. Can you ? Ss: Yes. T: (While describing, let the Ss fill in the missingantecedents.) The city ______ he was born in was London. (which) The luckiest woman _____ married to him is Victoria. (who) The current club __________he works for is Realmadrid. (that/which) The reason ______ I love him is that he is handsome. (why) Q: Can you guess? Who is he or she? Ss: Yes, he is David Beckham. T: Very good. Now it’s your turn now. on the paper I gave you, there are also the key words about a certain person. The sentences you make should also use attributive clauses. One minute to prepare. One minute later, I’ll invite some of you to describe your person. (One minute later…) Ss: …. T: All of you did a good job. And from XX’s descriptions, we know that Mandela did a lot to fight for blacks. In my heart, he is a hero. He is a great man. What about you? Ss: He is a great man. He is brave. …… Step 2 Fast Reading T: There’s a poor black worker whose name is Elias. Do you want to know what Mandela is in his heart? Ss: Yes. T: Now open your books, turn to Page 34, Elias’ Story. Since Elias is an ordinary worker, while Mandela is a great person, do they have any connection? If have, what’s the relationship between them? Read the story quickly and find the answer to this question. (After skimming ) T: What’s the relationship between them? Ss: They are friends. T: Yes, quite good. They are friends. And just now we skimmed the passage, have you got the general idea of this story? (Give the Ss a multiple choice )    The story is about “How Mandela helped black people.” Step 3 Careful Reading T: As we’ve known what the story mainly tells us, how do you think Elias organized his story? In order of time or in order of place? Ss: In order of time. T: Now please read the story again and fill in the blanks on the exercise paper. (given before class) (Bb: when         what         why     )  When we tell a story, the time it happened, what happened and why it happened are the essential items. (Give some minutes, and after finishing the paper, let Ss state their opinions) T: From the timeline of Elias’, what kind of life did Elias live? Ss: A hard one. T: Yes, indeed.  Q1: And what difficulties did black people like Elias have in South Africa? ( have no vote could not choose who ruled them The parts of town where they lived were places decided by white people. could not get job (out of work ) The places where they were sent to live was the poorest areas. )  And Mandela did help Elias a lot. Why was he willing to help him? Ss: Because they were both black. T: Q2: What did Mandela do to help Elias and other black people?  I will give you some verbs. Please add the detailed information.  (opened; organized; broke; blew up)  (Giving some minutes, and let Ss fill in the blanks) T: Q3: Why did Elias and Mandela both chose to blow up the government buildings?    ( “The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.” “… we were put in a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the Government. We chose to attack the law. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed… only thendid we decide to answer violence with violence.”)

www.lexue88.com (After Ss giving the answers, explain some language points in the sentence.) T: What does the word see in this sentence mean? Ss: 见证 T: Yes. And here I’ve found some sentences using the word see. Can you tell me which one shares the same meaning with the mentioned one? (show the multiple choice on the screen )  And who would be kind enough to find the attributive clauses in these sentences for me ? Step 4 Pair work (Consolidation) T: Now nearly fifty years has passed, these tow old friends meet again. They are recalling the hardship they spent together years before. They are talking about their past.  According to the information on the blackboard, use the words and phrases we learned in this class to make up a dialogue. Practice in pairs. One plays the role of Elias and the other acts as Mandela. In your dialogue you should use at least one attributive clause. (Let students come to the front to show their dialogue.) Step 5 Group Work T: Your classmates gave us a wonderful dialogue between Mandela and Elias. Besides Mandela, what other great men who fought for the freedom and rights do you know? There was an international conference held in Beijing last Saturday. Do you know what it is? Ss: …. T: It is Beijing Summit. Many African guests have come to Beijing .Our chairman met some of them. (show some pictures about the African presidents: the President of Sudan(苏丹); Mbeki (姆贝基); Mubarak (穆巴拉克)) Now suppose you were a journalist. You had a task to interview Mubarak, President of Egypt. Maybe these tips may help you. 1928: born in a Muslim family in Egypt 1947: studied in a Military(军事的) College realize his dream of … 1972: appointed as the Commander of Air Force 1975: Vice President of Egypt 1981. 10 : The former President was murdered.   He was elected as the President of Egypt.
