Teaching goals

Enable the students to understand the noun clauses as the subject.

Teaching methods

1.Seeing some pictures to have a better understanding of the astronomical terms in the text.

2. Listening to the sound recording to have a better understanding of the text

3. Skimming and scanning

4. Asking-and-answering activity to check the students’understanding of the text

5. Individual, pair or group work to finish each task

6. Discussion

CAI and a MP3 player

Preparation before class

The Ss find out about the beginning of the universe on the Internet or from books.

Teaching procedures

Step 1.Warming-up

Show the Ss some pictures of the universe and the earth.

Qs: 1) Do you know each religion or culture has its own ideas about the beginning of the universe? Do you know any examples?

2) Do you know what a scientific idea is?

Step2 Pre-reading

Help the Ss to have a better understanding of the following terms:

The Big Bang is the term used to describe a huge explosion that scientists believe happened about 15 billion years ago, creating our universe.

The universe is made up of stars, planets and other matter scattered throughout space.

A galaxy is a huge collection of stars held together by gravity.

The Milky Way is a large spiral galaxy measuring about 100,000 light-years across.

Our solar system is made up of the sun and the objects that orbit it.

Stars are large balls of hot gas that produce light and heat through nuclear reactions. The sun is the nearest star to the earth.

Planets are the largest objects that circle around the stars. (the earth, our planet)

Satellites are objects that move in orbit around other objects of greater mass. 

Step3Introduction

Is there life in all the celestial bodies?

Do you know why there is life on the earth?

How has life developed?

Step4Skimming

The Ss read the text quickly and do Ex 1 on Page 26, SB.

Step 5 Careful reading

  1. Read the first paragraph and answer: How did water come into being on the earth?

    What is the significance of the presence of water on the earth?

  2. Read Paragraph 2 and 3 to find out the order of development of life and do Ex 2 on Page 27, SB.

Step6 Retelling

The Ss listen to the recording of the text and get prepared to retell the text with the help of the order of development of life.

Step 7 . Discussion

Why is the presence of plants important for the development of life?

What can we do to make the earth a better place to live on?

Step 8 Homework

Do Ex 3 on Page 27 and write down the retelling of the text on the exercise book.
