The United States is mainly an English-speaking country. A great number of population speaks English as their native language. Business, education and most public aspects of life are conducted in English. Across the country, people pronounce English sounds in several different ways and some regional differences in words spelling exist, but for the most parts, Americans speak one common language. This language is sometimes called American English.
However, not everyone in the US is a native speaker of English. Most of the persons coming into the country are speakers of other languages. There are hundreds of communities around the US where the US where English is not the most commonly used language. Chinese, Italian, German, Greek, Vietnamese and French are all spoken in a great number of communities in the United States. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language after English in the US. It is widely spoken in New York and across the southern part of the country.
For speakers of other languages, learning English is important, but traditionally, teaching people to speak English as a second language was given little attention. Non-English speakers were expected to "pick up" the language through getting in touch with people in public. Recently, this has changed. Today, most large public schools and community colleges have ESL(English as a Second Language)programs. American English teachers feel that English students should learn the language in the way they will be using it. Therefore, ESL programs teach different English lessons to different students. Some programs teach students to be able to express their thoughts in English in public.

Everyone wants to have good health. As a popular saying goes, "Health is better than wealth." Good health lets a person enjoy his life and get what he hopes for in his job. However, poor health may make a person lose his interest in the things around him. So health is necessary to one's life happiness. There are many ways to help us build up our health.
We should keep a balanced diet. Too much meat and junk food are bad for our health. So we should eat more vegetables and fruits. According to doctors' advice, we can have some bread, milk, an egg and enough fruit in the morning. For lunch, we can eat rice, vegetables, fruits and some fish or meat. In the evening, we can have some porridge with green beans, some vegetables and meat as well.
Exercising every day is also necessary for us to stay healthy. We should plan our physical exercise according to our age and our physical condition. For example, the young can do sports like soccer and basketball, while Tai Ji Quan for the old. By doing exercise, students can stay away from diseases and study with more efficiency (效率).
It is clear that good health is connected to our spirits. We can overcome all kinds of difficulties and keep fit by holding a positive (积极的) attitude towards life. On one hand, some students go on working hard though they fail in exams sometimes. In the end, they get good marks because they think they can make it and never give up. On the other hand, other students may think that they can not do well in exams, so they decide to give up.
